I've grown so accustomed to hearing Aussie slang that I don't think it's that unusual anymore. One thing I did notice in class is that they call markers "texters." And the word curb is spelled "kerb." Also, whinging = whining.
This is probably going to be my least eventful blog post (besides finals week)…sorry.
I spent the weekend (Thurs April 16-Sun April 19) procrastinating, studying, eating, and going for a few beach runs. I have two midterms and a few quizzes this week unfortunately…school is a drag even in Australia.
On Sunday, Campus East had an international food fair for lunch. I tried kangaroo for the first time! It was pretty good. And I obviously got poutine from Canada.
All I want is to know when my finals are so I can book my study break trip. All of my friends are planning stuff for the last few weekends, since we're getting closer to the end than we are to the beginning. I still want to go to Fiji, Bali, the Whitsundays, Gold Coast and Brisbane…but there's not really any time left.
Monday April 20
I failed my first midterm (hydraulics)!
The rain was ridiculous today. Thankfully Jesse was on the bus back to Campus East with me, because without him the walk would've been miserable. But with him, it was laughable. There was such strong wind and so much rain, it was coming sideways and our umbrellas were useless. We got completely soaked.
It's cold now too, ever since coming back from NZ. It goes down to the 40's and 50's at night and only gets to the low 60's during the day. I was not prepared for it to be so cold so soon.
More studying.
Tuesday April 21
My four hour photography practical was cancelled! Best day ever.
Alana found out that Tiger Air has Tiger Tuesday deals on flights every Tuesday and I saw $45 roundtrip to Melbourne! Too bad I already booked my flight….
I realized that in the month of May, I am going to be traveling more than I am in Wollongong. I am spending 18 days traveling/with my family, and only 13 days in Wollongong.
We are playing a Campus East game of assassin. I got Brian as my target and Alana got Jesse. It's funny because Jesse was really paranoid and changed his name to David on Facebook to avoid being found (and he can't change it back for 60 days), but his assassin already knows who he is!
Wednesday April 22
My second midterm (pollution control) was pretty easy! Woo.
When I was at the library doing my last bit of studying it hit me how many people are at this school. I can go all day without really seeing anyone I know (except in classes). It's weird going from 4,000 people at Lehigh to 20,000.
The rain is still insane. Apparently it's really bad in Sydney and there's flooding and people dying and really high winds. And broken umbrellas everywhere. (Google "umbrellas of Sydney"). It's the worst storm they've had in 10 years.
I killed Brian and his target for assassin. I thought Dave had me but he convinced me he didn't. Went to Alana's room after dinner and Dave trapped me in the closet because I actually am his target. He didn't get me though. Then had an enjoyable uni night with my friends.
Thursday April 23
Left for Sydney with Brian at 3 to go see some of our New Zealand friends! We stayed with Harrison and Danny in Newtown. They and a group of other people go to school in Sydney, and Laura, Ryan and (different) Danny came to visit from Brisbane. Missed them! We went to World Bar which is owned by the same people as one of our favorite places in New Zealand. We all had a good time, and it was fun to be together again.
Friday April 24
The whole group went to Bondi beach for the day. It was kinda chilly, but a nice day, and Bondi beach is so beautiful. We even found Pirate (our NZ tour guide) there on the beach! There were lots of trucks moving sand back onto the beach from the parking lot, because it had been blown all over by the storm. For our evening activity, we saw the new Avengers movie. (I've never seen any of the other ones but I thought it was really good!)
Saturday April 25
Today was ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) day. Everyone gets up early to celebrate/honor those in the army. I, however, got back on the train to Wollongong to get started on some projects and reports. And yet, I got distracted by the beautiful sunny day and (relatively) warm 75 degree weather at the beach. The beach is all changed from the storm, it's really steep now.
Sun April 26
I was really productive today and got a lot of homework done for once.
Tuesday April 28
Photography was supposed to be my fun and easy elective, but it's actually my least favorite class. Today we were working on a landscape project, so I brought all my pictures from beautiful New Zealand and my teacher didn't like them…..wut.
Despite my long day of class and coming back in the dark at 7:30, I was in a good mood. Even though school and studying still sucks, I am in Australia, and am very lucky to be here. Gotta enjoy it while it lasts, because it's going by so fast! And, with only 3 days of class, tomorrow is Friday for me!
I mistakenly stopped by Alana's room to say hi and she immediately texted her roommate to come kill me for assassin.
Brian and I are leaving for Cairns on Thursday! I'm excited to go somewhere that still has 80 degree weather! And of course I'm also excited to see the Great Barrier Reef. In addition to snorkeling on the reef, we are doing a waterfall hiking tour and whitewater rafting. Should be fun!
Thanks for reading, have a lovely day:)
